How To Make A SeattleDIY Monthly Newsletter****NEWSLETTER!**** If anyone wants to do the newsletter in future months, this is how I do it. I'll keep this info on our Wiki - seattlediy.pbwiki.com
Step 1: Update the online Calendar. Visit the Locations and Projects websites listed for items to add to the calendar: http://www.seattlediy.com/projects.html When adding content, put it in the following format:
(bands, events, etc - brief description!) (Month, Day) @ (Name of Location) (Address)
Step 2: Put events into a document. Once the calender is fully updated, copy the full month's calendar (http://www.seattlediy.com/calendar/) into your favorite text-editing program, like Word or Open Office or Notepad, or whatever. In the document with the calendar list and format it like so:
(Month, Day)
brief event details more details @ location
brief event details more details @ location
(Month, next day)
etc etc etc
It takes a while to do the formatting. What you'll be doing is taking out a lot of the info from the online calender - only leave the bare bones, and don't put the address or cost (unless it's atypical for an event) - the address will be on the side of the page with the events. If you know of an easier way to do it, do it! In past newsletters, the text is in Rockwell font, either size 6 or 7pt.
Step 3: Put it in the template. Once it's in the document and formatted, import it into "The Template" (located at http://www.seattlediy.com/newsletter/) into the program Scribus (scribus.net) If you have questions on how to do it, ask me! THEN, look at the other 'Text Boxes' for Regular Events, the Intro, News, Farmers Markets and make sure that each of the content in the boxes are up to date. Unsure if they're up to date? Check SeattleDIY.com and/or check the past month's newsletter. If you're unsure of what to add for news, ask around, send an email to the mailing list, or check places' websites to see if anything interesting is going on. Just do your best.
Step 4: Print the master. Print the newsletter on 8.5"x14" paper. I usually print a couple, just in case. The template should have everything spaced so it'll fold nicely.
Step 5: Get art! Give the printed copy of the newsletter to the person doing the art. The only real important thing is to have them draw a SeattleDIY logo, and have it clearly say the month and year of the newsletter on the front fold.
Step 6: Print it! We usually make between 300-500 copies of the newsletter. If you need a place to print it, ask Benji. If you know of a free hook up, then by all means use it! Most places are expensive to print this many, so if you're hoping to get compensated by the SDIY fund, try to not print too many, cuz we don't have that much $$! |
